Margie Glenn Lancaster Smith, who was born the first of four daughters to James Franklin Lancaster and Bertha Baxter Lancaster on February 2, 1926 in Richton, Perry County, Mississippi passed away peacefully and entered the presence of our Lord on November 11, 2023 at the age of 97. She is preceded in death by her parents, her two sisters, Adelaide Parks and Sarah Lancaster, and her husband, Dr. Edward Smith. She is survived by her sister, Mary Ann Lancaster Ingram, in addition to several nieces and nephews and one great niece who loved her dearly.
Margie completed Jones County Junior College and then graduated from Mississippi State College for Women in 1949 with a degree in Bacteriology. For the next six years she worked in the laboratory of the State Board of Health in Jackson, Mississippi. Six months after the University Medical Center opened, she took a position there as a research assistant, working with Dr. Fred Allison in the new Department of Medicine. She earned a Master’s Degree at the University of Mississippi in 1965. That same year she entered medical school and became a doctor in 1969 at the age of 43. She completed a one-year internship and a three-year Neurology residency at the Medical Center. Following this in 1973 she joined the medical staff as a neurologist at the Mississippi State Hospital at Whitfield where she worked until retirement in 1991 as the head neurologist.
After retirement she and her husband moved to the country where Margie enjoyed gardening and growing daylilies and other flowers. She worked in her yard well into her nineties. For several years she was a volunteer at the Mississippi Art Museum and the Science Museum.
Always interested in education, Margie and her husband, Ed, established a School of Medicine Scholarship Endowment to benefit medical students at the University of Mississippi Medical Center .
She loved all animals, especially dogs, and was a long-time supporter of the Mississippi Animal Rescue League.
