Mabel Ruffer Briggs, 104, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 19, 2017 in Jackson, MS. She was born in Meridian, Mississippi in January, 1913 to Frank and Janie Ruffer. She attended Meridian High School, graduated from MSCW, and taught school in Meridian.
After marrying Duncan D. “Charlie” Briggs in 1937, they moved to Jackson in 1940, where he was the regional manager of the Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York. In 1944, they moved to Darien, Connecticut, where she was a member of the Junior League, and then to Atlanta, Georgia in 1950, where she was one of the three founding members of the Cerebral Palsy School and Clinic. In 1964, they returned to Jackson. A member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, she was a lovely and graceful woman, wife and mother.
Mrs. Briggs was preceded in death by her husband. She is survived by four sons, Col. Duncan D. Briggs, Jr. of Oak Hill, VA, Dr. Frank L.R. Briggs (Mary Jo) of Jackson, MS, W. Spurgeon Briggs (Tanya) of Stone Mountain, GA, and Charles R. Briggs (Jerry) of Redmond, OR She had six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2017 from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm at Lakewood Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 3:00 pm at Lakewood Funeral Home with burial to follow at Lakewood Memorial Park.
