Lonnie Gerald Boyd, 86. After a lengthy illness passed peacefully at home on September 22,2022 into the loving care of our Lord and Savior. He was surrounded by all his loved ones. Lonnie was born to the late John and Walterine Boyd in Scooba, Mississippi on May 1, 1936. He was the youngest of four siblings.
A graduate of Union Public Schools, he received his Bachelor of Science degree from Mississippi College and master’s degree from the University of Southern Mississippi. Lonnie was employed by Jackson Public Schools 1961 – 1996 serving as teacher, coach, and principal. He was an educator at heart and always took the time to help solve a math problem or tutor his grandchildren. In addition to his career in education, he was a soldier in the army, meeting with the 412 Engineer Command in Vicksburg, Mississippi before retiring with the rank of Colonel. Lonnie and his wife attended First United Methodist Church in Clinton, MS, for more than fifty years. They recently had relocated to Hernando, MS. and affiliated with the Hernando United Methodist Church.
Lonnie’s greatest joy was being with his family, especially his wife of 60 years. He was a beloved father, grandfather, uncle and friend. He was a lover of life and enjoyed playing tricks on all his family and friends. Lonnie cherished the time spent with his large family, whether it was family trips to the beach or a simple dinner on a Friday night. He was quick to make friends, never to meet a stranger, with his easy laugh and gift of gab. In a house divided, Lonnie was a staunch Mississippi State fan, and he rarely missed the opportunity to watch a bulldog basketball game. Having played basketball in both high school and college, he often joked with his wife that his three daughters definitely did not inherit the sports gene. He loved his little dog “Wally” and would take him on daily walks and rides. He will be dearly missed by all.
Lonnie is survived by his wife, Carolyn Biedenharn Boyd; his daughters, Kimberly Boyd McLaughlin (David); Carol Boyd Cook (Tony); son-in-law, Steve Bailey; his six grandchildren; Stephen Bailey (Margaret), Jordan Caroline Cook, Taylor Williams Ivers (Franklin), Mary Claire Cook Harper (Houston), Brady Allen McLaughlin, and Loni Catherine Cook; and five great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Connie Boyd Bailey and his siblings Jay Boyd, Dorothy Boyd Carpenter, and Elsie Boyd English.
Visitation and service will be held on Tuesday, September 27, 2022 at Lakewood Funeral Home with visitation beginning at 12:00 pm and the service at 2:00 pm.
