June, lovingly known as "Nan" to so many, was born on October 27, 1930, as the only child of John Lorin and Thelma Francis Hersey, in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
June moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, as a young girl where her life was filled with the adventures of growing up in a place she still called "home." June loved New Orleans. She loved to share her fondly held memories of the hustle and bustle of "those days." She could paint pictures with her words of vivid imagery of working and shopping on Canal Street as a young adult. Her favorite New Orleans story was that of meeting the love of her life, James Marion Coughlin, Sr., or as she fondly referred to him, "Cooter." They were married in New Orleans on August 8, 1953.
June and "Cooter" moved to Jackson, Mississippi, in l959 where they planted their roots deep as they raised a family, complete, with 7 children. June, having been an only child, wanted her children to grow up in a home filled with the sounds and laughter of growing children. She adored her children and spoke of them with love and affection. Her greatest joy was raising her family with her beloved husband. They were active parishioners of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
June loved to travel. She loved history. Her knowledge was vast. Her wisdom was great. She could work a crossword puzzle in record time. June was a regal lady who was a stellar example to all those who knew her as a woman of beauty, grace, and strength. She was joyful and fun-loving. Her cherished memories were those days spent in New Orleans or on the Gulf Coast with her husband. Her favorite day was a dinner at Vrazel's restaurant on the water and a run at the casino. No one could make a day as fun at the casino as "Nan." Yet, she always came home with money. As she would famously say, "I never leave them my last dollar." In her later life those days were much more about happy memories with her husband than about any of her penny machines. She, simply, loved life and she loved those who shared her life, especially, her family.
June is preceded in death by her loving and cherished husband, James Marion Coughlin, Sr.; her great-granddaughter, Victoria Christina Anderson; and her parents.
She is survived by her loving children, Bridget Harkins (Jimmy) of Jackson, MS; James Coughlin, Jr. of Dyersburg, TN; Maureen Johnson (Johnny) of Pensacola, FL; Dan Coughlin, MD (Terrie) of Whitfield, MS; John Coughlin (Cathy) of Clinton, MS; Mike Coughlin of Waukegan, IL: and Pat Coughlin (Tina) of Madison, MS.
She is survived by 20 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and by her dearly loved best friends of over 7 decades, Uncle Louie and Aunt Joyce "Bootsy" Martello of Metarie, LA, and brother-in-law, Bill Coughlin of Birmingham, AL.
