Joseph Rodney Doss, Jr., age 93 went to be with his heavenly father after a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s Disease on April 13, 2018. Visitation will be held Monday April 16, 2018 from 5- 7 pm at Lakewood Memorial Funeral Home, Clinton Blvd. and again one hour prior to the funeral services on Tuesday. Memorial services will be held in the Chapel of Lakewood Funeral Home, Clinton Blvd. Tuesday, April 17th at 11:00 am with Graveside services to follow in Lakewood Memorial Park Cemetery.
Joe, as all of his friends called him, was born April 27, 1924. He was preceded in death by his parents Joseph Rodney Doss, Sr. and Mattie Griffin Doss and four sisters, Ann Lou Doss Beasley, Elizabeth Doss, Virginia Doss and Lorena Griffin. Joe grew up in Thorn, MS. Upon graduation from Houston High School, he entered the U. S. Army and served in WW II as a Staff Sgt. in the 40th Signal Construction Battalion from July, 1943 through February, 1946. His service was in both theaters, Europe and the Pacific.
He moved to Jackson in 1946 and worked with the Mississippi State Highway Department and South Central Bell Telephone Company and later began his service with the U. S. Postal Service retiring after thirty -six years of service. In 1975, he and his family moved from Jackson to Clinton.
Joe was an active member of First Baptist Church, Clinton. He loved serving as a Deacon, President of Joy Makers, working with Forever Young and other needed church activities. He loved taking an active part in Sunday School and Men’s Prayer Group. Travelling was his delight. Joe loved to help others especially older people. He was also active in the Huntcliff Home Owners’ Association.
Joe is survived by his wife of 70 years, Doris Latimer Doss, two sons, Joseph Robert Doss (Nan) of Hattiesburg and William Rodney Doss (Nancy) of Clinton; four grandchildren; Mary Elizabeth Doss, Angela Doss, Lindsey Doss Chenhall (Brent) and Matthew Doss (Sara), three great grandsons and one great step-granddaughter; one sister; Mary Ruth Bagley of Houston, MS and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family would also like to express appreciation to Mary Powers (Parker), and Cheryl Yelverton (Joel), his nieces for their loving help. Also, special appreciation to Joe’s longtime caregivers: Mary Jo, Dorothy, Jerdean, Barbara, Linda, Corine and Janice for their faithfulness and tireless efforts in providing help and assistance over the past few years. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to First Baptist Church Joy Makers or your favorite charity.
