John S. Murphey, Jr., 81, passed away on Monday, April 20, 2015 at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland, MS. His family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff at the Ministries for the wonderful care and comfort he and the family received.
Mr. Murphey was born in Oxford, MS on January 14, 1934 to the late John Smith and Gaither Garrett Murphey. He graduated from Castle Heights Military Academy in Lebanon, TN and later attended Ole Miss. Mr. Murphey served his country in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958. He was co-owner of J & G Express Truckline in Jackson, MS. He was a long time member of the Shriners and served as Master Mason of the Masonic Lodge 600 in Jackson, MS. He also was the Past-President of the Jackson Civil War Round Table.
Mr. Murphey is survived by his sons, John S. Murphey III (Mollie) and James Scott Murphey; grandchildren, Shane, Matt, Jessica, Sarah and Allison; his sister Jane Hatcher (Everett) of Memphis, TN; and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Murphey will be greatly missed as a dedicated father, friend and patriot.
Visitation will be held on Friday, April 24, 2015 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM and on Saturday, April 25, 2015 from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at Lakewood Funeral Home, Clinton Blvd. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home chapel on Saturday at 11:00 AM with interment to follow at Lakewood Memorial Park.
