Joe Patrick Puckett, age 90, died Tuesday, June 15, 2010 in Madison. Services will be at 11:00 AM on Friday, June 18, 2010 at Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home High Street Chapel with Dr. Jim Futral, Dr. Rob Futral and Rev. Grant McElveen officiating. Burial will follow at Lakewood Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Thursday, June 17, 2010 at Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home on High Street and one hour prior to the service on Friday.
Mr. Puckett was born June 18, 1919, in Puckett, Mississippi, the son of Jesse Daniel Puckett and Linnie May Purvis. He graduated from Puckett High School in 1937. He worked for Buckeye Cotton Oil Company and graduated from Jackson Commercial College. In 1941 he was called to active duty serving in the army where he served in the Pacific area during World War II. After 6 years of active duty, Mr. Puckett was honorably discharged and served in the army reserves until June 1979 when he retired as a Colonel.
After serving in the army on active duty, he returned to Jackson, Mississippi where he worked at the V.A. Hospital and graduated from Millsaps College with a degree in Business Administration. While working at the V.A. Hospital he met his future wife, Mildred Walker, a registered nurse, and they were married March 30, 1952 in the V.A. Hospital Chapel.
Mr. Puckett worked for the V.A. for 32 years and retired in 1979. He spent his retirement years involved in farming and raising cattle in Puckett, Mississippi. The last few years of his life were spent in Madison, Mississippi.
He was an active member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Jackson, Mississippi, Parkview Baptist Church in Metairie, Louisiana and Broadmoor Baptist Church in Madison, Mississippi. He was also a member of the Military Officers Association of America, Military Order of World Wars, Veteran of Foreign Wars, American Legion and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
He is preceded in death by his wife Mildred Walker Puckett, two brothers, Carey Puckett and L.G. “Bud” Puckett and three sisters, Merle Dowdy, Erlene Calhoun and Rewena Sanford.
He is survived by his two children, Lillian Marie Kraft and her husband Joe of Madison, Mississippi and Patty Charlene Dear and her husband David of Brandon, Mississippi. Three grandchildren, Thomas Watson and his wife Kendra of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Scott Watson and Katie Kraft of Madison, Mississippi. One brother, Jessie Daniel Puckett, Jr. of Puckett, Mississippi and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Mrs. Lucille Lyles for her excellent care during the last three years and the nurses and staff at Stay-Home Health and Hospice.
Memorials may be made to the Puckett Cemetery Association, Broadmoor Baptist Church Building Fund or to a favorite charity.
