Janie was born Nov 5, 1928 to Homer and Alma (Greer) Scott in Leake County, Ms. On January 26, 1946 she married her forever love, Horace Slay.
Janie is preceded in death by her husband Horace Slay; parents, Homer and Alma Scott; brother Davis Scott and sister, Ruth Scott Hickson. She is survived by her son Horace Scott “Scotty” (Millie) Slay; grandchildren Horace Scott Slay, Jr. (Kelli) Slay, Robby (Amy) Lofton, Hunter Slay and Michelle Delehanty; great grandchildren Evan Slay, Scottlyn Slay, Trent Lofton and Shelby Lofton; brother, Homer Cleveland (Ann) Scott and loving friend and caregiver, Chris Wade, who sang with and loved on her until her last breathe.
“Her children arise up and call her blessed, her husband also and he praiseth her” Proverbs 31:28. Janie exuded gentleness and kindness all the days of her life. No one left her presence without knowing how much she loved her family and how much she loved them. She lavished everyone she knew with compliments on how beautiful they were, or how handsome they were or how sweet they were. Janie Slay was a true blessing to all who knew her. She was humble in spirit, had a heart for service, blessed others through hospitality, handled herself gracefully, she was a faithful companion to her beloved Horace and she loved her family fiercely. In her words, “they were all the sweetest people she’s ever known.” In her last years while suffering from dementia, she would often sing. When things would get difficult we could ask her to sing for us. Her favorite song was “Jesus Loves Me”. She sang this for her grandchildren and great grandchildren just this week. What a comfort to know her Jesus loved her and is hold her in His arms for eternity.
“Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, but a women who fears the Lord, she shall be praised”
