Herbert was born in Jackson on July 18, 1925 to the late William Norman Robertson and Leonora Rebecca Herring Robertson. He attended schools in the Jackson area and graduated from Central High School in 1943. Upon graduating high school he served as part of the “Greatest Generation” with the United States Marine Corps in the Pacific during World War II from 1943 until 1946. After leaving the service, Herbert attended Mississippi State College where he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity and sold Bibles/books for the Southwestern Company. He later attributed his accomplishments in life to the experiences and relationships developed through Southwestern. Following graduation from Mississippi State, Herbert attended Ole Miss Law School, and Harvard Business School in Cambridge, MA.
In 1951 Herbert returned to Jackson to join the family’s business of recycling motor oil which was initially a family hobby and grew over the years to Jackson Oil Products Company, a re-refining operation and regional distributor for Pennzoil, motor oils, lubricants, and other automotive products.
On June 28, 1952, Herbert married Patsy Parsons, also from Jackson, sharing their lives and love for more than 60 years.
He attended Capital Street United Methodist Church the majority of his life and was most recently a member of Christ United Methodist Church. He served on the boards of Riggs Manor Retirement Community and Community Place.
Herbert was a charter member of the Rankin County Kiwanis Club and served on the Dixie National Sale of Champions Committee for approximately 40 years.
He was a former member of the Country Club of Jackson where he played golf as long as he was able and loved playing bridge when not able to play golf.
He is preceded in death by his parents, William Norman Robertson and Leonora Rebecca Herring Robertson; and seven siblings: Norman Robertson, Eddie Robertson, Blanche Minks (Raymond), Harold Robertson, Dan Robertson, Jones Robertson and Brooks Robertson.
Survivors include his wife, Patsy Parsons Robertson; and three sons: Dr. Michael R. Robertson (Theresa) of Sedona, AZ, David C. Robertson of Jackson, and Bryan K. Robertson (Karen Evers) of Jackson.
Visitation will be held at Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home in Jackson on Thursday, December 27, 2012 from 4-7 PM. Funeral Services will be held at Galloway United Methodist Church at 11:00 AM on Friday, December 28, 2012 with Burial Service to follow at Lakewood Memorial Park.
