Mrs. Mangum was born in 1912 in Vaiden, Mississippi in Carroll County to Bessie Thornton Hearon and Granville Hearon. In her early childhood, she lived in Attala County until the family moved to Jackson where she lived until she graduated from Central High School and Millsaps College. After graduation, she was a math teacher for several years in the Magee schools. In 1933, she was married to W C Mangum in Calvary Baptist Church by her former pastor, Dr. H. M. King, and later lived in Magee for 58 years. She was devoted to her family, her friends, her school and community activities, as well as her church, First Baptist Church of Magee, where she taught a Bible class for a number of years and participated in all phases of the church program.
She was preceded in death by her husband W C Mangum, a businessman and pharmacist who operated his own pharmacy until his death in 1966. It was always
Mrs. Mangum’s desire to be an encourager in the many ways she was involved in her community. It was not unusual, in her later years, for her to receive notes of appreciation from former students as well as friends and employees, for the help she had been to them in earlier years.
In 1991, she moved back to Jackson and placed her church membership at First Baptist Church of Jackson, where she was involved in the church program as her health permitted.
She was preceded in death by her only sister, Mrs. Murray D. Stringer (Nellie Ruth) of Madison and by her two brothers James G. Hearon and Thomas E. Hearon and sister-in law Jane Hearon and by an aunt, Mrs Eulala Thornton Stovall, all of Jackson.
