On Friday, December 11, 2020, Elsie Boyd English passed away at home peacefully from natural causes at the age of 86 surrounded by family and friends. She was born in Scooba, Mississippi on April 6, 1934 to John and Walterine Boyd. Elsie was predeceased by her loving husband and the love of her life of 44 years, Olis D. English.
Elsie was a distinguished teacher for 35 years in the Jackson Public School District. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Millsaps as well as a Master of Science degree from the University of Southern Mississippi. She taught 9th grade English at Whitten Jr. High School. Her students fondly described her as a tough and no-nonsense educator. She was an avid reader and enjoyed books, magazines, and newspapers on a daily basis.
Elsie was a living example of devotion and patience. She had a legacy of enduring lifelong friendships. She loved to encourage others. Family and friends delighted in her company and presence. She was known for her “goofy” sense of humor making her daughters and grandchildren double over with laughter. She loved southern food, all sports and was exceptionally fond of MSU sports. She was a dedicated mother and grandmother. She treasured her two daughters and embraced every moment with her grandchildren, who affectionately called her “Gram.” She was a devout and prayerful soul, who as her younger daughter, Kellye, described as having a “Hotline to Jesus.” She was a strong woman and was not afraid of anything. She was the matriarch of her family and would give her shirt for a friend.
Elsie lived a full life as wife, mother, and grandmother. She will be greatly missed by her extensive family and friends. We will carry her in our hearts and her legacy will live on through our family. We love you, Mom and Gram. Go with God.
