William David Barfield was born on February 18, 1969, in Jackson, Mississippi, to William S. Barfield and Diane Barfield. He was welcomed home by his big sisters, Donna and Susan. Four years later, his little sister, Kim, came along, and pestered him for the rest of his life. He was close with his cousin, Tim. As kids, they made music together, which contributed to David’s lifelong love of music and his pursuit of a musical career.
He was an amazing guitarist and played in numerous bands throughout his life, most notably, Smokin’, Blind Rage, and Fade to Blue. Other musicians wanted to play music with him due to his high standard of musicianship. He was a perfectionist. He was a guitar teacher at Morrison Brothers Music and Mississippi Music for many years and briefly taught at Guitar Center in Texas. He attended Hinds Community College, North Texas State University, where he studied classical guitar, and Belhaven College.
He loved soccer and Mississippi State football – he and his father hollered at the TV and rang the cowbell vigorously while watching every game. He enjoyed sitting in his room to “pick-out” his favorite songs on guitar. He loved his mother’s cooking and a good jelly sandwich. David was a loveable guy. He was funny, sweet, loyal, and charismatic. He loved his family and loud music.
He joined his parents and other loved ones on August 6, 2024, surrounded by all the familiarities of home and the love of his family that lingered in the bones of his childhood home. He’s survived by his three sisters, Donna Coulson of Montgomery, TX, Susan Lopez of Dickinson, TX, and Kimberly Stoutner (Oliver) of Lexington, NC. He also left behind his special cousin, Tim Cotton of Brandon, MS, and a host of nieces and nephews: Willa and Louisa Stoutner (Louisa is also David’s Goddaughter), Trevor, Travis (Pack your bags, Murph!), and Lillie Lopez, Robert, Laura, and Jimmy Coulson, and his loving dog, Macy.
A visitation for David will be held Saturday, August 17, 2024 from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Lakewood Funeral Home, 6011 Clinton Blvd, Jackson, Mississippi 39209, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM.
David will be laid to rest in Lakewood Memorial Park, 6000 Clinton Blvd., Jackson, Mississippi 39209.
