Mr. Charles William Whitten

Charles William Whitten (1922-2018) departed this life on September 27 at his daughter's home in Clinton. Born and reared on a small family farm in Choctaw County, he was baptized at age eight by Beulah Baptist Church. He was licensed to preach the gospel and ordained to the ministry by First Baptist Church of Clinton while a student at Mississippi College, where he was graduated Bachelor of Arts in 1940. At the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, he was engaged to Nella Dean (Indy) Mitchell and graduated Master of Theology in 1946. Married in 1947, Charles and Indy served as Southern Baptist missionaries to Argentina (1947-1952), Spain (mainland 1953-1980, Canary Islands 1981-1984), and Equatorial Guinea (1985-1987). During retirement they resided in Clinton, accepting short-term missionary assignments from time to time.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents W. A. Whitten and Velma Eddleman Whitten, his brothers Paul Whitten (elder) and W. A. Whitten II (younger), and his beloved Indy. He is survived by four children (Helen Whitten Cobb, David Charles Whitten, Margaret Whitten Drummond, and John William Whitten), thirty-nine grandchildren, forty great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
