Carl Robert Howorth of Raymond, MS, a true member of the greatest generation, passed away on November 6th at the age of 99. Carl was born on August 31, 1924 in Jackson, MS to Carl Glenn Howorth and Mable Alta Roberts. Carl finished high school at Burns, MS.
A Veteran of WWII, Carl served in the Army as a combat infantryman and Staff Sargent in Australia, New Guinea and the Philippines. As a member of the 41st Infantry Division, 162nd Infantry G Company, he participated in action on Biak, an island in the Pacific, where his unit suffered 75% casualties and severe disease. Carl suffered from Dengue fever and jaundice, losing from 185 to less than 100 pounds. After recovering, he was reassigned to Company E with the 186th Infantry. He recorded his war experience for the World War II Museum in New Orleans, LA.
Mr. Howorth attended Millsaps College and received his BS degree in Business from Mississippi College in 1950 and his M.B.A. in 1970. After working for the City of Jackson, he joined S.N. Thomas & Son’s where he became Sales Manager. In 1961, Carl began a career with Mississippi College as the Manager of The Trading Post, the college owned bookstore and print shop. He loved the book business and serving the student and faculty community at MC. Carl was recognized by the college for his innovative ideas and solutions to make the store a financial asset to the college. During his career he devoted many years of service to the National Association of College Stores, serving as Chairman of the first NACS convention, receiving the NACS Booksellers diploma and completing graduate level programs in management at New York University, Oberlin College and Harvard University. He was also instrumental in organizing the Mississippi Association of College Stores, serving as the charter President. Carl retired in 1990 after 29 years of service at Mississippi College.
Carl married Brunell Boozer Howorth of Pulaski, Mississippi and they celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary in 2023. During their married life they only rarely had to call for someone to fix an appliance, car or other broken device as Carl was a creative and talented handyman and mechanic. He was never intimidated by a situation and enjoyed the challenge of solving a difficult problem. He and his wife always had a large and productive garden and loved being able to eat what they grew. After retirement, he enjoyed traveling with his wife both in the U.S. and in Europe. Carl was a devoted father and grandfather, always being available to help when needed and sharing his knowledge and wisdom. His integrity, optimism and devotion to helping others were an inspiration to those who knew him.
Mr. Howorth is survived by his wife, Brunell Boozer Howorth, son Brian K. Howorth of Nesbit, daughter Pamelia C. Howorth of Raymond, grandsons William A. (Andy) Schmegel (Kate Potapova) of College Park, MD, Eric Carl Schmegel of Raymond, informally adopted grandson Sedrick Djano (Jolie) of Dallas, TX, and their young boys Shalom and Shamir. He also is survived by his dearly loved nephew and niece, Bruce Thomas and Cherie Thomas and great nieces, Betty Thomas Resnick (Phillip) of Washington D.C. and Tori Thomas Horner (Kellan) of Denver, CO.
Family and Friends are invited to attend visitation at 1:00 p.m. followed by a memorial service at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, November 10th at Lakewood Funeral Home, 6011 Clinton Blvd., Jackson, MS 39209.
