Andrew “Drew” Calder Davis (known to many as Alice) of San Francisco was born February 19, 1981, in Jackson, Mississippi. He was the son of Robert Lee and Sue Vanderford Davis. He died August 29, 2021, in San Francisco.
Drew is preceded in death by his father and his grandparents, Carey Seldon and Nancy Hitt Vanderford of Kosciusko and Bemiss North and Hazel Pettit Davis of New Orleans. He is survived by his mother, his sister Carey Davis Bates (John) of Madison, and two nieces, Cecily and Miriam.
Drew grew up in Covenant Presbyterian Church in Jackson and attended First Presbyterian Church Day School. In 1999 he graduated from Jackson Prep where he was active in the band, performed in many theater productions, and was co-editor of the literary magazine. He was an Eagle Scout. At New York University he was in the Tisch School of the Arts his freshman year. He spent the next year driving a New York taxi; on 9/11 he was picking up a fare at the World Trade Center when the first plane hit the tower. He returned home and attended Mississippi State University for two years.
He worked as a software engineer for many years in Jackson, Memphis, New York, and San Francisco. He was passionate about contributing to secured and anonymized in-browser communications and data sharing platforms to amplify voices of marginalized communities.
Those who knew him were always amazed at his kindness, his creativity, his mischievous nature, and his ability to listen. He was a team player and loved networking with people. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Visitation will be held at Covenant Presbyterian Church on Saturday, September 18, 2021, at 10:00 a.m. with the memorial service following at 11:00 in the sanctuary. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
