Mary Chames of Grand Rapids passed peacefully Saturday from pneumonia. Mrs. Chames entered this world in Arkansas in 1935, the eldest child of her late parents William and Lucy. As an adult, she moved to Detroit to work for Michigan Bell, and it was in Detroit that she met the love of her life, her late husband, Nicholas. They spent 53 years together until he passed in 2012, and together they raised 4 adoring children, all of whom she loved “to pieces.” Mrs. Chames was always active in her community and in her childrens’ schools. She loved to entertain and was known for her outstanding meatballs. Most of all, however, she will be remembered as a thoughtful, generous, funny, and sharp-witted woman whose enthusiasm and laughter will be deeply missed by her family and friends. She is survived by her four loving children, three grandchildren, a sister, and two brothers.
A small service for family and Mary’s immediate friends will be held at St. Joseph Shrine Catholic Church, in Brooklyn, MI on Friday March 22, 2024 at 2:00 P.M. with visitation beginning at 1:00 P.M. Burial at St. Joseph Shrine Cemetery.
Mary always saw to it that a guest in her home never left hungry. Therefore, in lieu of flowers, please direct donations to the Capuchin Soup Kitchen in Detroit.
