Died peacefully on December 11, 2014 at the age of 98. Born July 5, 1916 to Akie and Johnnie Adams in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, Libby displayed musical talents at a young age. Her beautiful singing voice opened many doors including a scholarship to Guilford College in North Carolina, the opportunity to study music in New York, an appearance on CBS Radio's Major Bowes Amateur Hour, and bookings with various bands. While appearing in Detroit in the late 1930's she met another talented musician, bandleader Ken Watkins. This meeting led to him booking her as the lead singer in his band and a marriage of almost 50 years. Libby loved the life of glamour and celebrity she had enjoyed as a singer. She closely followed the movie and entertainment industry and had wonderful stories to tell of those celebrities she had met during her career. She was always conscious of her looks and until the last cared about her clothes and makeup, particularly her lipstick which had to be "red." Her son, David Watkins of Hayward, California, and step-daughter, Lynne Loftis of Jackson, wish to thank the staff at Arbor Manor Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Summit Park Assisted Living, and Allegiance Hospice for their support and kindness. Cremation has taken place, and Libby's life will be celebrated at a private family gathering.
