Charles Stewart was born January 29, 1942 in Jackson, Michigan to William V. and Cora Stewart. He went peacefully to be with the Lord on Monday, October 31, 2011 at home in Jackson, Michigan. He was preceded in death by both his mother and father.
Charles was better known as Charlie and Chuck to all that knew and loved him. As a believer in Christ, he united with Haven Methodist Church as a young man. Charles and his brother, Fred, joined the Boy Scouts of America when they were young boys. He attended Jackson Public Schools where he graduated from Jackson High School. A short time later, Charlie decided to enlist in the military, where he joined the United States Army. He served as a Private E-1 from June 4, 1964 to May 5, 1966 when he was honorably discharged. He then served in the Army Reserve until June 3, 1970.
When Charlie was released from his obligation in the Army Reserves, he found employment with the Jackson County Animal Shelter and W.A. Foote Memorial Hospital. Following his employment there, he decided to relocate to the Ann Arbor, Michigan area where he became employed with the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Department as a Deputy Sheriff. He took great pride in the work that he did with the Sheriff’s office and was highly regarded by his employer and co-workers. He began employment with the Sheriff’s Department on December 13, 1967 and worked there until he retired January 6, 1990. During the time that he worked with the Sheriff’s Office, Charlie utilized most of his free time to the benefit of the Ann Arbor community. He volunteered to work with the Boy Scouts of America Troop 11 and Washtenaw County Junior Cadets. Even though Charlie never married and had children of his own, he fostered and mentored many children in the area. He volunteered for the Explorer Program through the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Department for a number of years. One of the things his friends and family will remember most is that he was always there when you needed him.
Charlie’s memory will always be cherished by family members. He is survived by his siblings, including Vernon Stewart (Sheryon) of Lancaster, California, Fred L. Stewart (Jean), Evelyn Woods, and Shirley Stewart all of Jackson, Michigan. His nieces and nephews include Lavena Wilder, Lisa Stewart, Ayanna Stewart, Denika Stewart, DaQuez Stewart, Deja Quinlan, Mark Stewart, David Stewart, and Vincent Stewart. He had many, many special friends and other relatives, including Marge and Harry Kipfmiller and Dennis Sims.
His sense of humor is one of the things all of us will especially remember about Charlie and his love for his family, his community, and life. The impact he made on the lives of so many young people is a legacy that will live on and on. He will always be loved and will remain in our hearts forever. We all loved and cherished Charlie, but God loves him most.
A service honoring his life is scheduled at the funeral home on Monday November 7, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. with a visitation preceding the service at 10:00 A.M. He will be laid to rest with military honors in Ft. Custer National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family.
