William Thomas “Tom” Wilkinson, Jr., 85, of Chapin, passed away on Friday, April 12, 2024. He passed peacefully with his loving wife of 42 years by his side. Tom was born in Blair, NE on May 29, 1938, to William Thomas Wilkinson, Sr. and Claire K. Nelson. He was the youngest of three children.
As the only son of a farmer, he grew up helping his father on their farm. Following graduation from high school, Tom enlisted in the Navy Reserve where he served for 3 years. Immediately following, he attended the University of Florida, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Horticulture in 1964. After graduating from college, Tom entered the agrochemical field with a short stint in southern Florida and Puerto Rico, later settling in SC.
He served the farmers of SC through his 31-year career with Dow Elanco. He was a member of various professional organizations including the SCFAA (South Carolina Fertilizer and Agrichemical Association) and the South Carolina Soybean Association. In 1973, he was recognized as a top producer in his field, receiving the Plus Performer award. Tom was respected by all and was a mentor to so many. He built many long-lasting relationships with co-workers and customers throughout his career. One such relationship would prove to be the most important as it led to meeting the love of his life, Minnabeth “Beth”. After marrying in 1981, they built a life together in Irmo and later moved to their dream home on Lake Murray where they would spend many fulfilling years together.
Upon retirement from Dow Elanco, Tom continued to work in the agrochemical field for Clemson Extension where Beth would often join him. He enjoyed time boating on Lake Murray, taking trips to Edisto with family and friends, and cheering on his beloved Clemson Tigers.
Tom was a devoted member of Ashland United Methodist Church where he served his Lord in many capacities. He was a leader of the Ushers, member of the United Methodist Men, and served as Chairman of the Trustees Committee, just to name a few. Tom was also a loyal service member of the Chapin Rotary for many years.
Tom was loved and admired by everyone he encountered. He was kind, loyal, and his love for the Lord shined through his infectious smile.
Tom is survived by his wife, Beth; their children Marlow Gudmundson, Ginger Miller (Alex), Shawn Wilkinson (Sarah), Jay Wilkinson, Katherine Smith (Laird); and his sister, Susan Clifford, of Lincoln, NE. He also leaves behind 8 grandchildren who he loved dearly. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Claire Wilkinson, and his sister, Shirley Seng.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 19th at 2 pm at Ashland United Methodist Church. Family members will receive guests in Ashland Hall immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to Ashland United Methodist Church or Alzheimer’s Association.
