Tedi Neeley Butler passed away surrounded by family at home on November 5, 2023 after a very short, but brave fight against a brain tumor. Born on April 30, 1957 in Raleigh, NC, Tedi grew up all over the United States, but claimed South Carolina as home. She graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1978, where she was an active and proud member of the Kappa Delta sisterhood. It was there that she met many of her lifelong friends and the love of her life, Butch. Butch and Tedi were married in 1978 and raised three children together.
Tedi loved a family gathering, whether with her immediate family or large extended family. For many, she was a valued confidante, shoulder to cry on, and advice giver. Her intellect, humor, and strong opinions benefitted all those who called on her for help. Food was her love language. She was the first to volunteer to bring over a pot of soup or warm casserole when a friend needed it. A lifelong musician, Tedi was an active member of the Union United Methodist Chancel Choir and Sandlapper Singers. She traveled to Europe twice to sing on tour with the choirs. She led family singalongs on the banks of the Edisto River on many holidays. She had a green thumb that was evident in her beautiful garden and many, many plants around her house.
Tedi was preceded in death by her husband Butch in April 2023. She is survived by her mother, Gretchen Clement Neeley Briden, her brother, Ed Neeley (Beth Neeley), her sister Amy Neeley (John Heaton), her children Catherine Butler (Sarah Downey), Paige Butler Morton (Chris Morton), and Max Butler (Amber Butler), and grandchildren Charlie and Neeley Morton, along with numerous beloved cousins.
The family would like to thank Tedi’s wide circle of friends for their love and support during this very shocking and short illness. They provided needed meals, physical help, and love from near and far.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Union United Methodist Music Fund or Sandlapper Singers.
