Renee Steiner Johnson, 72, of Irmo, South Carolina, passed away on Wednesday, August 16, 2023. Born in Dickinson, North Dakota she was the daughter of the late Joseph (Joe) Bernard Steiner and Elizabeth (Betty) Schaaf Steiner of New England, North Dakota. Renee was the loving wife of 47 years to Thomas A. (Artie) Johnson of Kingstree, South Carolina. Renee graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic High School in New England, North Dakota and after graduation she pursued her education at Minot State College in Minot, North Dakota where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology, and also met her future husband Tom (Artie) who was stationed at Minot AFB, North Dakota. After their marriage in July 1976 she and Tom were stationed at several air force bases, but her favorites were Ellsworth AFB Rapid City, South Dakota and Spangdahlem AFB, Germany. Upon retirement from the Air Force they moved to Columbia, SC and she went on to work at the South Carolina Court of Appeals. Renee loved her job working within the court system. She had a love for puzzles, reading, plants, shopping and especially playing the slot machines at casinos and scratchers. Renee was a member of the Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Chapin, SC.
She is survived by her husband Tom, their daughters, Katherine Dean (Andy) Kasperek of Omaha, NE, Shanda Kayne (Chris) Coogler of Irmo, and four grandchildren, Andrew and Ryan Kasperek and Alex and Drake Coogler. Additional surviving siblings are her brothers Calvin, Carson, and Brian, along with sisters Lana, Wanda, Sherry and Jody. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother Bernie.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society and Columbia SC Animal Shelter.
A visitation for Renee will be held Friday, August 25, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Dunbar Funeral Home - Dutch Fork Chapel, 7600 Woodrow St, Irmo, South Carolina 29063. A memorial service will occur Friday, August 25, 2023 at 11:00 AM, 7600 Woodrow St, Irmo, South Carolina 29063. A graveside service will occur Friday, August 25, 2023 at 1:00 PM at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Rd, Columbia, South Carolina 29229.
