Mrs. Hyatt was born on April 7, 1953, in Huntington, WV. She spent her formative years working in her father’s furniture store, Stationer’s, which also served as the bookstore for Marshall University. She shared fond memories of her time at Stationer’s, especially regarding her ability to get the best new vinyl records to add to her extensive collection. After graduating from Huntington High School in 1971, she then went on to graduate from Marshall University in 1975, where she majored in Special Education.
After moving to Columbia, SC, Mrs. Hyatt worked as an account executive at Bellsouth for 19 years. She married the love of her life, Dean Hyatt, of Columbia, SC, in 1991. Together, they enjoyed shooting competitive billiards and spending time at their vacation home on Edisto Island. Mrs. Hyatt also loved riding and training horses, and snuggling with her dog, Layla. Joyce was a long time member of Lake Murray Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. Hyatt was predeceased by her beloved husband, Dean Hyatt, her parents, Virginia Peterson and Robert Topping, stepfather, Donald Malcolm Peterson, and siblings Bob Topping and Carol Barr. Her remaining family includes her children, Kristin (Brian) Graber, and Troy (Casey) Hyatt, grandchildren, Ella and Joshua Paschall, Briceton Graber, and Libby Hyatt, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mrs. Hyatt’s funeral will be on Wednesday, December 7, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel in Irmo, SC. There will be a visitation with family prior to the service from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
