Joe, as he was affectionately known, was a shining light to all those who had the privilege of knowing him. His brief life was marked by love, kindness, faith and adventure.
He had a wonderful Irish wit and a smile known by everyone. He had a true love for all animals including our Boston Terrier, Lily. There wasn't a worm on a hot summer sidewalk he wouldn't save.
Joe is survived by his loving parents, Don and Mary; his sister and best friend Sara Rothell, her husband Seth and his nieces Sutton Therese and Sallie; brother Brad and his wife Ellen, nieces Kathryn and Margaret; his sister Kelly Pelfrey, her husband Brandon and nephews and nieces Belle, Christian, Katye, Lily and Ben.
Joe had a special bond with his uncle John Brannigan, his cousins John Francis and Margaret and their mother, Darcy. He loved many more aunts, uncles and cousins.
He loved his many dear friends from childhood to the present day.
Joe was a graduate of Irmo High School and proud Gamecock graduate of the University of South Carolina in 2016. He loved all things Gamecock and always had the fondest memories of a family trip to Ireland. He loved his Irish heritage. He loved yearly family trips to Hilton Head Island and Harbourtown. He grew up with Gregg Russell concerts and knew the hidden spot where the manatees lived.
He loved hot sauce on anything.
He grew up in a family of faith and most recently had a strong desire to grow in his faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. He was a member St Joseph's Catholic Church.
There are no words to describe the pain of losing our precious Joe from our lives.
A dear friend, who understands the loss of a child, sent me these words:
"A child is so weak and vulnerable right after his birth. A child comes into life and we protect it and give our lives to it. You watched your child grow into a man. You watched him from helplessness to independence, from babbling to a gift of speech that warmed those around him. That future you embraced is gone."
He shared this prayer which is now our prayer:
Whatever you say, we believe you.
Whatever you do, we trust you.
Wherever you lead, we will follow you.
We devote ourselves to you above all others.
We give up all of our desires and pursuits for yours.
There is no cost too great for being your disciple.
We abandon everything that we may come after you.
Our hope and our lives are in your hands.
The Rosary will be recited at 6:00 pm on Tuesday, March 18 at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, 195 Amicks Ferry Road, Chapin, SC 29036. The family will greet friends following the Rosary. A Funeral Mass will be held at 1:30 pm on Wednesday, March 19 at the church, with a repass to follow.
