Dr. Jesse E. Teel, Jr., Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Marketing, University of South Carolina, died on September 15, 2016. He was born on April 30, 1942, in Junction City, Arkansas, to Lena Highsmith Teel and Jesse Elvin Teel. After high school, he enlisted in the Navy and was stationed in San Diego, San Francisco, and Charleston. While in Charleston, he married his wife of 52 years, Sandra Jones Teel. Shortly after completing his degree at the University of North Carolina, Jesse served in Viet Nam aboard the U.S.S. Stanley. The family was then stationed in Virginia Beach, where their son Xan (the light of his life) was born. He earned his MBA from Old Dominion and his PhD from the University of North Carolina. Before becoming a full professor at the University of South Carolina, Dr. Teel taught at the University of Alabama and Michigan State University. He taught undergraduate and graduate courses and published numerous articles in academic and professional journals. He received the Alfred G Smith, Jr. award for excellence in teaching in 1986 and the Outstanding PMBA Professor in 1999, both from the Darla Moore School of Business. At his retirement, he was named Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Marketing. The death of his son, Xan, in 1992 broke his heart. Since that time, he has mentored many young people and spent his time enjoying the remaining pleasures that life has to offer and being a friend to many. Dr. Teel is predeceased by his parents, his beloved son, Xan, his brother Richard (“Dickie”) and his sister, Juanita Sprayberry. He is survived by his wife, Sandi, and his sister, Pearl Bailey of Magnolia, Arkansas. Graveside services for will be held at Bush River Memorial Gardens at 10 am on September 21, 2016. Following the service, the family will receive friends and guests at The Episcopal Church of St. Simon & St. Jude (1110 Kinley Road, Irmo, SC).
