He was born in South Amboy, NJ and graduated from Sacred Heart Grammar School, St. Mary’s High School, and received a bachelor’s degree from Rutgers College of Engineering. He later received an MBA and PhD in International Business from University of South Carolina.
After graduating from Rutgers, he worked for ACCO in Maryland and the R&D Labs for Singer, in Fairfield, NJ, before moving to South Carolina and working for many years at NCR in West Columbia. After a Postdoc at Northeastern University in Boston, MA, he taught at Belk College of Business at UNC Charlotte for 6 years before returning to Boston where he was an Associate Professor of Strategy and International Business at Sawyer School of Business at Suffolk University.
Jim was an avid runner who ran many marathons. He especially enjoyed long runs with longtime friends and former colleagues in Columbia whenever he was in South Carolina. In addition to his love of learning and running, he enjoyed travelling, particularly his trips to Poland, and spending time with his beloved grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his parents, Ambrose F. and Mary T. Nebus. Surviving are his sisters, Marian Henze and her husband, Chuck, Leland, NC and Judith Nebus, and her husband, Peter Shiftouri, Jamesburg, NJ.
He is also survived by his wife, Patricia, and his children, Frances Bose and her husband, Aniruddha, State College, PA and Bernadette Owen and her husband, Wade, Gaithersburg, MD, and his grandchildren, Neel James and Tara Judith Bose, as well as many in-laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins who all mourn his loss.
The family would like to thank all those who took such good care of Jim during his illness, especially Dr. Jonathan Engh, Dr. Steven Madden, Dr. Quillan Davis, and their teams, as well as the Amedisys Hospice team.
A wake will be held on Monday, April 1, 2024 from 6-8 pm at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, 7600 Woodrow Street, Irmo. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Thomas More Church, 1610 Greene Street, Columbia, SC, on Tuesday, April 2, 2024 at 10:30 am followed by burial at Our Lady of the Lake Cemetery in Chapin.
