Wally was born June 2, 1938 in Roanoke Rapids, NC, the oldest son of Coy E. and Willie Wallace. He completed high school in Newport, NC and attended NC State before entering the Air Force as an aviation cadet. He completed his bachelor degree from the University of Tampa and a MBA from Trinity University in San Antonio. He was also a graduate of Squadron Officers School, Air Command and Staff Collage and the Air War College.
He completed his 30 year career as director of Tactical air Control systems at Ninth Air Force/CENTAF but most of his career was spent flying Airplanes which included The T-29, C-124, Hu-16, HC-54, F-4d, OV-IO and T-37. Wally was a member of a small group of planners that worked to develop the Rapid Deployment Force into Central Command/CENTAF that directs the US forces in the Middle East today.
His decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying W/20LCS Meritorious Service Medal W/10LC, Air Medal W/120LCS, and the Vietnam Service Medal W/3BSS.
After retirement Wally worked for several firms for 15 years supporting ESC in developing new advanced Command and control systems including J-Stars, data links for the F-35 and RPV's, improvement to AWACS, modernizing the AOC's.
Surviving in addition to his wife are Daughters Beth Corley and husband Steve, and Tracy White and husband Donnie of Lexington; Grandchildren Kendall E. Mixon, Wallace Anne Mixon, Dana White Proctor (William), Donnie White (Mary Madison), and Buck White; Great-granddaughters, Evelyn Grace Proctor and Emma White Proctor; His Brother, Larry S. Wallace of Surfside Beach, SC; and his Sister, Peggy Mason and husband Keith of Newport, NC.
Wally's greatest past time was taking his wife, children and grandchildren to the family Beach House located on the shores' of Bogue Sound at Morehead City NC.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, April 22, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. in Fort Jackson National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Humane Society, 405 Greenlawn Drive Columbia, SC 29209.
