CHAPIN – Mr. Harvey Davis Harrelson Sr., affectionately known as “Nook” to family and friends, passed away into the arms of his Savior on Friday, August 20, 2021. Born in Columbia on December 31, 1923, he was the son of the late Dow Harrelson and Mary Cummings Harrelson. Mr. Harrelson graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1946. He had retired as a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force, and served as a fighter pilot during WWII in the European theater. After the war, Mr. Harrelson worked with his brother at T.J. Harrelson Roofing and Supply in Columbia until his retirement to Chapin
Harvey Sr. and his wife, Abbie, of 71 years, who predeceased him in 2017, were longtime members of Chapin Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Harrelson enjoyed the outdoors and was a passionate fisherman and hunter. In his later years, he became an avid gardener.
Mr. Harrelson was blessed with a lifelong group of friends, and during his 97 years, never lost his sense of humor or took himself too seriously.
Surviving are his son, Harvey D. Harrelson Jr. (Beth) of Charlotte N.C.; daughter, Abbie Nancy Niven (Malcolm) of Piedmont, S.C.; four grandchildren, Megan Harrelson Cheung (Fergus), Caroline Grace Harrelson, Felicia Kay Niven (Robert), and Malcolm Davis Niven; one great-grandchild, Abbie Kay Call.
The family is especially thankful to the many years of faithful and loving commitment by his caregivers, Jamie Kirkland and Mary Hunt.
A funeral service for Harvey Davis Harrelson Sr. will be held at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, August 29, 2021 at Chapin Presbyterian Church in Chapin, S.C., with burial to be held at Bethany Baptist Church at 4:30 p.m. in Bishopville, S.C. Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, Irmo, is assisting the family
