A memorial service for Harold Mark Goodwin, Jr will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 6 at St Andrews Presbyterian Church in Irmo, SC. The family will receive friends at 10 a.m. prior to the service.
Mark passed away at age 87 on Sunday evening, May 1, 2022. He was born in Marietta, GA on October 19, 1934 to the late Susie Mae Hayes Goodwin and Harold Mark Goodwin, Sr. He was an Eagle Scout and ran track at Marietta High School. After graduation he went into the Navy and served on the USS Coral Sea for two years. He went to Auburn University on the GI Bill, where he was head cheerleader, and graduated from there in 1960 with a B.A. in English. After graduating he married his wife Georgia and taught English and coached football and cross-country at Marietta High School. Then in 1964 he joined the FBI, and worked for the Bureau as a Special Agent for 22 years, both in Youngstown, OH and in Columbia, SC. He then worked for Stone Container Corporation as the head of security and retired a second time from there.
During retirement he taught Sunday School, led a Bible Study at a local nursing home, and was always helping anyone he knew of who needed it in practical ways big and small. He was funny, generous, humble, athletic, good with his hands, and had endless energy. He loved his wife, his children and their families well, and they meant everything to him. More than anything he was grateful to know God and serve Him. He was an active member of St Andrews Presbyterian Church in Irmo, SC.
Surviving are his wife of almost 62 years, Georgia D. Goodwin; son, Sam Goodwin (Lizzie) of Columbia, SC; daughters, Susan Moffitt (Dwight) of Columbia, SC, Catherine Gutshall (Mike) of Columbia, SC and Mimi Edwards (Jay) of Easley, SC; grandchildren Adam, Alison (Tanner), Erin (Britton), Michael, Karis, Emma, Katie, Sophie, Molly, Charlie, Ben, and Rosie; and great-grandchildren Nora Hansen, Jack Hansen and Milo Springgate.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Miriam and granddaughter Georgia Goodwin.
He is buried at Fort Jackson National Cemetery.
