COLUMBIA - A graveside service for George Henry Rodney III, 76, will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, September 5, 2020 in Bush River Memorial Gardens. Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, is assisting the family.
Mr. Rodney passed away Tuesday, September 1, 2020. Born in Burlington, NJ on September 17, 1943. He is preceded in death by his wife, Elma Elizabeth Rodney and his parents, George Henry Rodney, Jr. and Virginia May Rodney.
George served in the U.S. National Guard, worked as an engineer for Eaton Corporation and even took care of the giraffes at the Riverbanks Zoo after retirement. With a heart of gold, sharp wit, and a hearty sense of humor, George was often described as "The Best Dad of All Time" by his three children. He met the love of his life, Elma, while working for GE in Philadelphia and they were happily married for 51 years. George was an avid Philadelphia Eagles, and Philadelphia Phillies fan and frequented games with his sons and granddaughter. GO PHILLIES.
Surviving are his sons, George Scot Rodney of Irmo and Kenneth Robert Rodney of Chapin; daughter, Diana Lynn Haltiwanger (Brandon) of Batesburg; granddaughter, Blair Elizabeth Rodney (fiancé, Mason Putnam); sister, Virginia May Yung (Paul) of Three Rivers, Michigan; and his beloved dog, “Max.”
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude’s Place, Memphis, TN 38101.
