Esther Hunt Padget Columbia- Graveside service for Esther Hunt Padget, 91, will be held on Friday, November 13, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Andrews Lutheran Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service. Mrs. Padget passed away Tuesday, November 10, 2015. She was born March 7, 1924 at the family home in Saluda, SC. She was a daughter of the late Dr. J.A. Hunt and Emma Julia Schumpert Hunt. She was a graduate of Saluda High School and attended Anderson Junior College. She was a graduate of University of South Carolina with a B.A. in Elementary Education. On June 27, 1946 she married H. Fletcher Padget, Jr. and during Esther and Fletcher’s 50 years of marriage, Esther never worked outside the home. Her happiest roles were homemaker, mother, and hostess. The Padget home was always open to family and friends. The dining room was the setting for countless dinner parties and holiday celebrations. Decorating for each holiday and season was Esther’s forte. The downstairs playroom was the scene of many memorable theme parties, and the late night pool and pingpong tournaments. The kitchen table, where Esther could usually be found, was always ready for spur of the moment visits. Many happy hours were spent in a cappella sing-alongs around the dinner table after a good meal-or in songfests around the piano as she played all the old traditional hymns and all the old favorites from the “Great American Songbook.” Esther and Fletcher joined St. Mark United Methodist Church in the Earlewood area in 1951. In 1959 they built their home in the St. Andrews area near where Dutch Square Mall would eventually be developed. Over the years she was involved with various women’s clubs, bridge clubs, Brownie Scouts, Cub Scouts, girls softball and bowling leagues. Esther enjoyed crossword puzzles, word games, card games, soap operas, dark chocolate, and she inherited a love for birds from her mother which she passed on to her children. Esther’s greatest role was that of mother to her three children, but she readily and easily assumed the role of “second Mother” to many, many younger friends-and eventually became “Grannie Ez” to an even younger generation. She is survived by daughter, Avice P. Brock and her husband Jake Brock of Columbia; sons, H.F. (Hank) Padget III of Columbia and Mark H. Padget and wife K.C. Padget of Jacksonville, FL.; grandson, Jason Jamie Putnam and fiancé Eliza Williams; granddaughter, Samantha Hunt Padget,; Grandson, Travis Clark Padget and wife McKenzie Padget,; great granddaughter, Blake Riley Padget. Predeceased by Husband; Parents; sister Avice H. Kaiser (Mrs. B.C.) of Nashville, TN; sister Eliza H. Peeler (Mrs. T.A.) of Shelby, NC. The family would like to express their thanks to the caregivers at Amedisys Home Health Care, Amedisys Hospice Care, and Agape Hospice House. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mark UMC, 3200 Lyles St., Columbia, SC 29201 or to a charity of one’s choice. Please sign our online guestbook at www.dunbarfunerals.com
