Carroll Roy “Buck” Amick, 94, passed away at home on July 29th after an extended illness. Buck was born on August 28th, 1929, to Edna Fudge Amick and Paul E. Amick in the rural area of Dutch Fork and grew up in the Elmwood section of Columbia. He graduated from Columbia high school and was employed for over 35 years with the electrical and communication division of the City of Columbia. He retired in 1983 and then returned to work for Eastminster Presbyterian Church’s maintenance team. He officiated high school and small college football for over 30 years, officiating more than 5 state championship games. He was inducted into the South Carolina Football Officials Hall of Fame in 2001.
He was a member of Centennial A.R. Presbyterian Church all his life where he served as Elder, Deacon and Sunday school teacher. He was instrumental in the formation and success of Centennial’s soup kitchen ministry, which provides bag lunches to the homeless in Columbia. He coached Little League baseball for many years and volunteered at Camp Joy, a camp for special needs children and adults. Buck was known for his laugh, his ability to offer encouragement to others, his dedication to his family, and his extraordinarily infectious smile. He cherished every minute he spent with his grandchildren and extended family.
His daily life was a testament to his unwavering love for the Lord and what it means to serve others through Christ. Surviving is his wife of over 73 years, Betty Garren Amick, who was the love of his life, four children, David Amick (Susan) of Tampa FL, Susan McCants of Irmo, Alice Fox (Bob) of Clemson, and Dewey Amick (Dixie) of Lexington. He was a proud granddaddy to 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at Centennial A.R. Presbyterian Church, 1413 Laurel Street, August 3rd at 4:00 pm. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the service. The family would like to thank the staff of Lighthouse Hospice Group and Diamond Krauss for their support and loving care. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Soup Kitchen Ministry at Centennial A.R. Presbyterian Church, 1413 Laurel St. Columbia SC 29201.
