He was born on July 28, 1941, to Jake Roberts and Iris Kathleen Thompson Roberts in Quanah, Texas. John married Elna Fern Owings on August 4, 1961. They celebrated 62 years of marriage shortly before John passed. John had a fulfilling career with the Texas Railroad Commission in the Oil and Gas Division, dedicating 41 years of service to the industry. He was a hardworking and passionate individual who took pride in his work as an oil field inspector, often delving into the history of the sites he was sent to because he loved the historical aspect of places.
In his free time, John pursued various hobbies that brought him joy and fulfillment. He had a love for history and spent countless hours researching and learning about the past. He was particularly fascinated by the history of Cowboys and Native Americans. John was also an avid reader, with a keen interest in historical literature. He enjoyed capturing moments through photography, exploring his culinary skills through cooking, and honing his craftsmanship as a blacksmith. He enjoyed metal detecting and genealogy, always eager to uncover artifacts or to trace his family's roots. John was a member of the Red River Renegades.
John was a loving and protective family man, survived by his wife Fern Roberts, his daughters Judy Baldwin and husband Eddie, Becky Pedon and husband Renato, and Stephanie Roberts. He is also survived by his brother Kenneth Roberts; grandchildren Kathryn Crowe and husband Brian, Jaryd Baldwin and wife Ashley, Andrea Pedon and husband Dominque Kosséhassé, and Nicholas Pedon; great grandchildren Brady, Quintyn, Cash, Rilyn, Londyn, J., and Vinsyn.
John's memorial service will be held on Friday, August 18, 2023, at 11:00 AM at the Iowa Park United Methodist Church in Iowa Park, Texas, under the direction of Dutton Funeral Home.
