Lt. Col. Jack Moore Railsback, JD (82) passed away Tuesday, December 7, 2010 in Wichita Falls. Funeral Services will be held at 10 AM on Friday, December 10, 2010 at the First Baptist Church of Iowa Park. Graveside Services will be held at the DFW National Cemetery under the direction of Dutton Funeral Home in Iowa Park.
Jack was born July 11, 1928 near Meridian, Bosque County, Texas to George Dewey and Vada Katherine (Moore) Railsback. Jack entered 100 year old Baylor University as a centennial freshman at the age of 16 and graduated from Baylor Law School in May 1948 as its youngest graduate. He had to wait one year until he turned 21 to receive his law license during which time he attended Baylor School of Business. Upon receiving his license he moved to Aspermont, Texas to begin private law practice and shortly to become County Attorney. There, he met Billie Jean Allen and they married November 4, 1950 in Aspermont (in 2010 they celebrated 60 years of marriage).
Jack was commissioned in 1951 as a 1st Lt. in USAF Reserve Judge Advocate. On March 27, 1952, he was called for active duty in San Antonio and entered Judge Advocate General (JAG) school in Montgomery, AL at Maxwell AFB. He returned to Lackland AFB and remained until released in October 1954. In January 1955, Jack and Billie moved to Midland, Texas to be the Land Title Attorney for Shell Oil Company but continued to be in the Reserve where he became a Captain.
In 1960, Jack moved to Meridian, TX to enter private practice, where he was a member of the School Board of Meridian ISD. In January 1963, he became County Judge of Bosque County and also was promoted to a Major in the Air Force Reserve.
In 1967, they moved to Iowa Park, Texas to become a civilian attorney for Shepard Air Force Base in the JAG Office where he became a Lt. Colonel. He retired from the Air Force in July 1979 with 28 years of service and 23 of those years from the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate.
Jack is a member of First Baptist Church, Iowa Park where he is Deacon Emeritus for serving our Lord as an ordained deacon for over 57 years. He also taught a young adult couples Sunday School class for many years.
Jack is survived by his wife, Billie, a daughter, Rita Shewmake (Roger) from Sioux Falls, SD and a son, Robert Kern (Barbara) from Athens, TX. He has four grandchildren, Bradley Kevin Worthy from Fort Worth, TX, Bridget Dawn Scott (Andrew) from Athens, TX, Brian Edward Worthy (Kaci) from Fort Worth, TX and Robert Kern II (Robby) Railsback from Bryan, TX. He also has two step grandchildren, Sarah Annette Henry (Todd) from Dallas, TX and David Allen Shewmake (Yahne) from Arlington, TX and three step great grandchildren, Hannah, Willa, and Liam. He also has three sisters-in-law, Dorothy Railsback from Waco, TX, Melba Harbin from Tyler, TX and Pat Allen from Redwood City, CA.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, December 9, 2010 from 6 PM to 8 PM.
