January 6, 1930 – September 8, 2024
Michael Archibald Murphy, beloved Husband, Daddy, and Pappa, passed away on September 8, 2024, born on January 6, 1930. Mike grew up on Egypt Road, NE Margaree. He was the eldest of 7.He moved to Toronto and married the love of his life Irene MacFarlane from Egypt Road, SW MArgaree. In Toronto Mike and Irene had their two eldest children before they moved home to Cape Breton. They bought the homestead in Dunvegan that they were so proud of, and had 4 more children.
He had a varied career. He was of the generation where he could turn his hand to anything and everything; and he indeed did that. He operated a family sawmill, cut and piled many a cord of pulp, worked at a battery factory, and finished out his work career with the Department of Highways in 1994. He operated the grader and snowplow. He truly knew every road, backroad and logging path of Inverness County.
His true passion was his family, which he showed through his loyalty to his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grand children. The adoration and dedication of his life as a husband to Irene demonstrated the true meaning of a marriage built on faith, love, and devotion.
The family of Mike would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the Inverness County Home Support Society, who took such good care of him and were instrumental in Mike being able to stay in his family home until he could no longer. We also would like to thank the Palliative care team, all nursing and medical staff at Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital, and to Mary Anderson NP who became a dear friend through her years of caring for him.
Mike was preceded in death by his wife Irene, his first born Karen Ann, and his siblings Belle, Angus,Rebecca, and Archie, and His parents Mike and Willena.
Mike is survived by children Marie(Wayne), Michele, Betty(Mose), Natalie(Robert), And Lloyd(Pamela); his grandchildren who were his reason to smile include Natasha, Megann, Michael, Bruce, Andrew,Stephen, Leah, Courtney,Emily, Stuart, and Derreck; his great-grand children who brought him so much joy Drew, Haivyn, Lily, Nicole,Marley, Ethan, Sawyer, Callie, Ruby, Grace, and Grayson; his brother Harry, sister Linda, and sister- in-law Eva.
The funeral for Mike -affectionally known as Pappa by all- will be held on Saturday September 14th 2024 at 11am at Saint Margaret of Scotland, Broad Cove. Visitation will be held prior to the Mass from 9:45am to 10:45am.
In Lieu of flowers Pappa requested donations be made to the school breakfast program at Inverness Education Centre/Academy. This request reflects his favorite saying, “If you’re leaving hungry, that’s your own fault,” a testament to his belief in the importance of ensuring others were well cared for.
