He leaves behind his wife of 57 years, Margaret (Pecka MacNeil) of Inverness. Loving father to Pat (Leo) Campbell and Charlene (Brian) MacEachen. Papa to Kim, Brad, Jennie and Ryan.
Much beloved brother of Lawrence (late Cathy), Sister Edna, the late Kay (Dick), Dan Tom, Archie (Helen), Alexander (Penny), Ann (Gip), Florence, Sadie, and Christine. John R. will also be sadly missed by his brother-in-law Richard and his many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Born in Judique, John R was a son of the late Angus "the Carpenter" and Christine (MacDonnell) MacDonald.
John R. left Cape Breton at a young age and went to Ontario where he held various jobs from moving to mining. He completed his working career with more than 25 years of service at Red Path Sugar in Toronto. It was in Toronto where John R. met his wife and they settled there to raise their family. John R. loved his Cape Breton home and would make the annual trip over the causeway every summer. John R. always enjoyed the good Cape Breton fiddle music of Buddy and Winston. Company was always welcome in their home. Card games of ‘125’ or ‘63’ were a common weekend event. Faith and the church were always present in his life.
John R. cherished his grandchildren. He loved teaching them how to play "Crazy 8s" and "125". He also found great pleasure in talking with them about their experience through the day and their recent adventures. They will miss him dearly.
Visitation will be on Thursday, July 27, from 2-4 and 7-9 in the Judique Fire Hall. The funeral mass will be held on Friday, July 28, at 11:00AM in the St. Andrew’s Church, Judique. Father MacMillan will be officiating. Burial to follow in the parish cemetery.
