It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, and friend, Catherine “Cat” Marie Cameron (Rankin) on December 29, 2019, in Inverary Manor.
She was the devoted wife of the late Martin Angus Cameron for 53 years; loving mother to Lawrence (Jeanette), Corinne (Peter), Lisa (Vern) and Michael (Linda); adoring grandmother to Douglas, Cassie, Rose, Patrick, Finley and Colin; and a proud aunt to many nieces and nephews.
Cat is survived by her sisters, Margaret R. Lauzon (Rudy), Donna Anne MacDonald (Hank), Mary Lorette Beaton (Donald), Judy MacDonald (Gerald), and Janet MacDonald (Hughie Francis); brothers, Angus Finley Rankin (Anne), Daniel Rankin (Effie), Harold Roderick Rankin (Paula), and Francis Terrence Rankin (Ella); and her special in-laws, especially Bill Cameron (Wilma). She was predeceased by loving husband, Martin Angus Cameron; her parents, John and Sally Rankin; her sister, Bessie MacDonald; and brothers, John Gerard Rankin, John Cameron Rankin, and Alexander J. Rankin.
Catherine was born on July 4, 1938, in Mabou, Cape Breton. She married Martin in 1962 and moved to Margaree Forks where they lived for 52 years.
Cat was an active member of Margaree’s community, as a pianist she accompanied Archie Neil Chisholm at many dances and concerts for over 25 years, she was a member of the Cape Breton Fiddlers Association, and of The CWL of North East Margaree. Catherine worked many different jobs during her lifetime, including as a cashier at the Margaree Co-op, as a receptionist at Margaree Lodge, and as the Post Mistress for Canada Post in Margaree Forks.
Cat will be forever remembered for her love of music – whether it be playing the piano herself or listening to her family sing and play; her delicious cooking and baking, enjoyed by all – especially biscuits and shortbread; and her dry sense of humor.
Our family will miss her dearly, cherish the memories we have and are thankful for the moments shared. Until we meet again, we love you.
We’d like to send a special and sincere thank you to all the staff at Inverary Manor. Everyone was so caring, patient and wonderful to Catherine, especially during her final days.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 1st from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Inverness Funeral Home, Inverness. A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, January 2nd at 11:00 a.m. in St. Michael's Church, East Margaree with Father MacDonald Ibeh officiating. Burial to follow in St. Joseph's Parish Cemetery, South West Margaree.
In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to the Inverary Manor or the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia.
