In John 13:34 Jesus says: “I give you a new commandment: that you should love one another, just as I have loved you, so you too should love one another”
Mae, Mom did just that. From the time she was born on March 2,1925, in Antigonish, N.S., mom demonstrated so many qualities, with LOVE as her main ingredient. She was devoted to her faith; her husband, the love of her life, Angus Bernard whom she married on October 26, 1948;
to her 13 children:
Alex (Sandra), Donelda (Craig), David (Sherry), Coline (James),Bernie, Joe, Bea (Todd), Maureen (Bob), Allan (Heather), Paul( Marguerite), Patricia (Steve) and her 23 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren:
and to her deceased family members, 2 sons Bernard and Joseph who died in infancy and two daughter's in law Mary and Elizabeth.
Mom was predeceased by her parents, Angus J Mac Donell and Mary Ann Gillis; brothers, Donald Alex and sister in law, Catherine, Vesty, sister: Margaret and Theresa and brother in law John Campbell. She is survived by her brothers: Blaise (Mary Lou) and Johnnie (Jeanette); sister, Bea and sister in law Magdeline.
Mom was a graduate of Port Hood Academy and the Amherst School of Business. She began her career at the Port Hood Coop and later became a full time wife and mother. Once all her children were in school she began a fulfilling career with Canada Post where she was a dedicated employee for 20 years in the communities of Port Hood, Judique and Mabou. Mom was a woman ahead of her time, accepting the challenge of balancing work and home while raising her family. Mom accomplished this with a positive attitude, along with style and grace.
Everyone who walked through Mom’s kitchen doors were instantly captivated by the aroma of home cooking and were made to feel so special and most welcome. To experience Mom’s patience, her kindness, her wit, her laughter, her magnificent cooking skills, her effortlessness as she “put on a spread” was indeed a privilege. Hospitality galore!
Mom’s community and friendships were far and wide. She was known “to be game for anything”. Mom travelled many miles to follow the numerous sporting activities of all her children and grandchildren. She loved cheering on their teams. She too loved sports and could throw a curling rock into the ring for a good draw, could bike the Magdalen Islands, could bowl strikes and skip a rock across the ocean. Watching sunsets from her home would often be accompanied by her saying: “that is the most beautiful sunset yet”
For Mom, going to dances, playing cards or bingo, making and drinking tea, visiting with neighbors and friends and dressing up for Hallowe’en were always enjoyed. Mom brought laughter to every occasion.
Family was Mom’s focus, with emphasis on “peace” and her wish for everyone to get along. She treated all her children equally; however, she was heard to say “I always have a soft spot for the boys”
A very special thank you is extended to the entire staff at the Inverary Manor, especially the staff in Harbour lights for their special care and compassion during Mom’s stay.
