Warren was born in Toledo, Ohio to John Morphis, and Elizabeth Battle on November 18, 1955. He attended Elder W. Diggs (P.S. #42), and Crispus Attucks High School, where in 1973, had the honor and distinction of graduating in the “Last All Black Class”! While at Attucks, Warren was a member of the Choir, Men’s Ensemble, and Glee Club. Warren also sang in the chorus of several musicals including “Westside Story”, “Bye, Bye, Birdie”, “South Pacific”, and “Oklahoma!”
Warren began playing bass guitar his freshman year of high school, and “cut his teeth” playing with such gospel greats as; Lewis Rowlette, as well as “The Indiana Wonders”. Warren was not only the youngest member of the Indiana Wonders but also the last living Wonder to enter the gates of Heaven. Warren also played for several local R&B bands (including, but not limited to), “Young, Gifted and Black”, “Chubby and The All-Stars”, “The Aberdeen Project”, and was currently with “The Upsetters”.
Warren achieved his QMA Certificate from Clark College. He worked as a Medical Technician for the Military Entrance Processing Station at Fort Benjamin Harris for 32 years. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served in Desert Storm. Warren was a member of the Martindale Church of Christ.
Warren is preceded in death by his parents, John Morphis and Elizabeth Battle and son Warren Douglas Morphis Jr.
Warren is survived by his children Erik Morphis, Constance Ball (Willie Ball) Christopher Morphis (Kristen Morphis) and Ashley Morphis. His brother Gilbert Morphis, and sister Brenda Royster. Grandchildren Warnaesha Morphis, Erik Morphis Jr, Erika Morphis, Willie Ball Jr., John Ball, Bryce Ball, Brianna Morphis, Christopher Morphis Jr, Devon Clark, Liam Hefley, and Jaymen Morphis.
A visitation for Warren will be held Monday, July 17, 2023, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Crown Hill Funeral Home, 700 W. 38th St., Indianapolis, IN 46208, followed by a celebration of life at 1:00 PM.
