Steve or “Silk” as he was called by his teammates, was not only a good basketball player, but as kind and as polite a person you could ever meet. 
My heart is heavy knowing what a loss it was to his family, classmates and friends.

He always be remembered.

I knew Steve through Earlham College. I was a dorm director and Steve was a energetic Freshman.  We developed a special friendship that I will always remember. Steve was kind and always looked out for me.  I lost contact with Steve but we reconnected for a brief moment in 2019.  We laughed and reminisced about the good times we had eating and watching movies. I learned of Steve’s passing through a friend of my sister today, which is the reason for the lateness of my entry. My condolences to the family and friends. I will miss my friend. 😢🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

I am just seeing this notice now for a man that I loved deeply with all my heart many years ago. I want to express my sincere condolences to his family and my heartfelt sympathy for your loss. Steve was the warmest, kindest, and true gentleman and I sincerely miss him since the day we last spoke. I adored him then and I will always adore him until my my last breath. Thank you to his parents for allowing me the privilege of loving your son for his time in this world. Our memories are in my heart forever.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Stevie Macs passing. His quiet charm was captivating and caused people to  stop and listen.  He provided perspective to a young and immature me, allowing me to see things in a way that I never imagined.  In the short time that I knew him in school I felt a bond that would last a lifetime.  I wish now that I spent more time trying to keep in touch.   Just last week I moved a photo that was taken of us In the Florida Keys and chuckled at the fun times we had.  We laughed together and cried together but mostly we laughed.  I look back on those few years as some of my fondest memories and Stevie Mac is one of the main reasons for those.  He was an incredible soul that gave me perspective on how to be a better person.  We will miss you.  

Steve and I were college buddies for 4 years at Earlham College. I have so many fond memories of those years and Steve played a prominent role as a true friend, amazing athlete and a great dancer. My heart goes out to all of his family members and I send my deepest sympathies and condolences. Even though he is missed by all of us, let us carry on his spirit within us.  

Stevie Mac and I were friends at Earlham. We spent a lot of time in class together since we were both Sociology/Anthropology majors. We became close friends junior year and then lived together with several other buddies senior year in Ramen House. I recall those as some of the most stimulating, educational and fun years of my life. Sometimes we studied together for sociology classes. This was especially true during senior year when we were working on our senior theses. 

As much as I learned in classes alongside Mac, especially from our mentor Steve Butler, I learned so much from Mac. In gentle, funny and/or firm ways, he helped me see many aspects of race relations, the Black experience and what today would be called whiteness to which I had been oblivious. We often talked about what was going on at Earlham, issues of the day, sports, and all kinds of goofy things. I especially remember staying up late with Peter Han, Bill Stassen and Mac to talk about all kinds of issues. Sometimes there were strong words. As stubborn as I was at times, though, Mac kept the conversations going. I still recall being stunned as lightbulbs went off. He explained things to me I had not seen. 

Mostly, though, I remember having fun together. One of the most memorable times was a trip we took to Florida during springbreak of our senior year. Peter Han, Chris Sadlier, Bill Stassen, Tim Zuella, Mac and I all piled into Joe Han’s tricked out van for an epic journey all the way down to Key West. We played hours and hours of spades, drank one or two beers, got sunburned, cringed from the raccoons outside our tents, and laughed until our sides hurt. 

Proud yet humble, kind, ready with a smile, and eager to have fun, Mac was a special friend. I’m sorry I didn’t see more of him after college. Now, my heart is full with cherished memories and hurting about his passing. I send my warm regards and sincere condolences to his family. I pray for God’s light in your lives.

I am saddened by the loss of Steven.
An exceptional athlete, he was even a better person.
Steven was on my basketball team as a 5th and 6th grader where he played in the John Marshall Junior Basketball League.
I selected him because of his natural basketball  ability.
He coaches nicknamed him "SILK" because his   skill level  was so smooth and advanced for his age group.
As part of the Marshall High School basketball staff I  had the pleasure of watching Steven  play for the next eight years.
His Senior year he was the starting guard for the Marshall  team which won the Sectional and was the Regional Finalist.
He later went on to attend Earlham College.
I had lost touch with him through the years but his parents kept me up to date on his  life.
As a coach, you develop a certain  bond with players  that you will always cherish. And  Steven, " SILK", was no exception.
To his family we extend our deepest and heartfelt sympathy.

Sue and I were saddened by the loss of Steve. We offer our condolences to his family. As Steve's BB Coach, I was fortunate to have a high quality person and a good player who had the highest respect of his Teammates and Coaches.  He will be missed by many.
