She was born in Harlem, New York to parents Reverend George and Mrs. Hattie Brooks, on March 18, 1934. Ruth was one of three children. Both brothers preceded her in death.
Ruth graduated from Crispus Attucks High School, earned her Bachelor of Science in Education from University of Cincinnati and her Master of Science in Education from Butler University. She was an enthusiastic, creative, and structured music educator in the Indianapolis Public School system for 33 years. Her love for teaching was matched by impassioned desire to have each of her students be successful in their every day academic and personal life as she encouraged them to walk, talk and dress for success wherever their path took them. Even though they found Ruth to be stern, they each knew she cared about them.
On June 16, 1957, Ruth married Hursel Eugene Williams, Jr., of Indianapolis, Indiana. They were married for 36 years. This union produced two daughters and one son. Hursel Eugene preceded her death.
Ruth accepted her Lord Jesus Christ at an early age. She continued in relationship with him in her personal life and as an active and faithful member of Westlane Christian Church where she was the Director of Music until her transition to be with Jesus. She desired everyone to sing! She would greet each first-time visitor to the church warmly followed closely by the question “Do you sing?” and the encouraging statement “If you can talk, you can sing!” Ruth wanted the whole congregation to be in the church choir! She also continued her passion for working with children by facilitating several ministries over the years such as a scripture drill team and youth choirs. Her musical expertise and her love and desire to grow God’s kingdom will be missed in many ministry areas at Westlane.
Ruth leaves to celebrate her life, her daughters Felecia Anele Williams; Kim Elaine Williams Johnson (Clifton Curtis); son Hursel Alan Williams; granddaughters Ashlynn Marie Neal; Kelsey Elaine Johnson; Kyra Naomi Johnson; Kennedy Alexis Williams; grandsons Steven Anthony Bradford; Taylor James Bradford. She also leaves behind two great granddaughters, as well as other nieces and nephews, Westlane church family and close family friends.
“The master was full of praise ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount…’” (from Matthew 25:21 NLT)
Ruth will be greatly missed.
