As her life journey neared the end, Ruth found solace knowing she would be reunited with her husband, the late John W. Baker, who passed away in June of 2008. They were married for over 62 years before his passing. John and Ruth met in Philadelphia while John was stationed there during World War II. They would fall in love almost instantaneously and married in August of 1946.
Mrs. Baker was a homemaker and avid golfer. She was a member of Highland Golf and Country Club where she won the Ladies Highland Club Championship in her early years. She was also a member of the YOLGA and OLGA golf associations, the Salvation Army, Women’s Auxiliary as well as a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Indianapolis. She most recently worshiped her Lord and Savior with the Christian congregation at Marquette.
She loved flowers and spent an extraordinary amount of time in her garden. She could cultivate wonderous beauty in a manner only a true green thumb could. Ruth was also a fervent reader; often reading multiple books on a weekly basis. She was a master bridge player; not a week that went by where she didn’t have at least one game set with her cronies.
Preceding her in death, her sister, Eleanor (Charles) Antrim and William J. Baker, her son and only child. She is survived by her brother, Bob (Nancy) Brown, along with several nieces and nephews, her daughter-in-law, Sally Baker, two grandsons, John (Annie) Baker and Ted (Michelle) Baker, as well as her two great grandchildren, Nash and Blaire Baker.
A memorial gathering will take place on Wednesday, January 2, 2019 from 11am until 1pm at Marquette Manor, 8140 Township Line Road, Indianapolis, IN 46260. A memorial service will immediately follow at 1pm. Pastor Joseph Johnson will be officiating.
In lieu of flowers, Ruth asked that contributions be made to Bill Baker Memorial Fund - Outrun the Sun, 8435 Keystone Crossing, Suite 175, Indianapolis, IN 46240 or to The Salvation Army at https://www.salvationarmyusa.org/usn/
