Ronald Douglass Clay, Sr. was born in Indianapolis, Indiana to the late Fredric M. Clay, Sr. and Mary Alice (Harris) Clay on March 1, 1943. His childhood education was at IPS School 24 (Lockefield), 4, and 17 and graduated from Crispus Attucks High School Class of 1960. He played one year of football at Crispus Attucks High School. After being hit the first time he said, “I quit”.
Ronald Douglass Clay, Jr. and Kevin Lamont (Monty) Clay were born to Ronald and Phyllis (Wimberly) Clay. Later he was joined in matrimony to Barbara (Burton) Clay in May of 1973 from that union Stacie Maree Clay was born. He worked at LaRue Carter Hospital where he met Barbara. He later worked at Bryant Heating Cooling/Carrier Corporation where he retired as an inspector after 37 years of service.
He honorably served in the United States Army. Ronald Douglass Clay, Sr. was a dues paying member of the Tillman H. Harpole American Legion Post 249. He was a committee member for Jazz in the Park. He frequented The 19th Hole where his wife said that was “his first home”. Ronald also spent time at Club Hub-Bub. He was an avid lover of jazz music and sports particularly basketball (an IU Hoosiers fan) and football. Ronald loved his family and grandchildren. He will be remembered for his smile, sarcastic whit, and kind soul.
Ronald Douglass Clay, Sr. is preceded in death by his parents (Fredric Clay, Sr and Mary Alice Clay), his sisters: Sherilyn L. Mabry and Hilda F. Wilson and brother in laws (George Andrew Wilson and Charles Jackson).
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife Barbara, sister: Marsha Jackson, and brother Fredric M. Clay Jr., children: Ronald Douglass Clay, Jr. (Kimberly), Kevin Lamont (Monty), Corey, Brittiany Tarver (David), and Stacie Clay, 9 grandchildren (affectionately known to some as G-Pa) and 14 great grand-children, 2 great-great grandchildren. Nieces: LeChelle Mabry, Melanie (Mel) Jackson, Nephews: George Andrew (Andy) Wilson II, Great nephews, Jonathan (Chris) Ross and Shea Thompson. Great Nieces: Tiana (T) Woods. A host of cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A visitation for Ronald will be held Monday, July 3, 2023, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Crown Hill Funeral Home, 700 W. 38th St., Indianapolis, IN 46208, followed by a celebration of life at 12:00 PM.
