Crown Hill Funeral Home & Cemetery
Robert D. Patton was born July 4, 1934, in Decatur, Alabama, third of ten children born to Charles Hayes and Minerva (Robinson) Patton. His childhood years were spent in Decatur, Alabama, until he decided to follow his oldest brother to Indianapolis where he made a home for his wife and oldest daughter.
Robert loved his work and provided well for his family in many ways. He worked for several years as a mechanic in the trucking industry, and transitioned to Labor Foremen for Shiel Sexton Construction Company, retiring after over 20 years of service. He always had a side job. Sometimes more than one.
For over 50 years, he worked as a security guard for Kingsley Terrace Church of Christ. Additionally, he had his own cleaning company, worked security jobs and also had a lawn service.
A man of few words, he was a Master of many trades. Robert D. loved his family, he took a hands-on approach to being a grandfather. He loved family vacations, and he made them fun. Robert took pride in his home and lawn but was passionate about his cars. On any given Sunday he could be found washing his cars. He was a terror with the water hose, spraying everyone in sight. The children knew if Daddy was in uniform, no retaliation was allowed. He always won.
Robert D. favorite pastime was photography. He documented family life like a professional, and we are blessed to have the pictures to prove it. Robert D. enjoyed life with his family. His birthday was a big family party, with Robert at the grill.
Robert was preceded in death by Carolyn, his beloved wife of 67 years. His parents Charles Hayes Patton and Minerva (Robinson) Patton Brothers; Hayes (Junior) Patton, Lewis Patton, Eugene Patton, Charles H. Patton, Jr. Sisters; Jesse Kennedy, Martha May Warren., grandson Patrick Patton, granddaughter Yelendra Patton, great-granddaughters; Denise Patton, Morgan Matthews and Nala Dior Colvin.
Robert is survived by his children; Annie Carol Pillow, Gloria J. Hall, Robert L. (Denise) Patton, Jr., Charles Jeffrey (Becky) Patton, Mark Anthony (Deborah) Patton, Donald O. (Sheila) Patton, Wayne Powell. Brother Leroy Patton, Sisters; Shirley (Roosevelt) Williams and Tracine Wood. He is also survived by 20 grandchildren, a host of great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
