IN THE CARE OF
Crown Hill Funeral Home & Cemetery
Rick passed away on the afternoon of Sunday, July 2, 2023. Born in Indianapolis on December 20th of 1946, he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout at the age of 12 and became a member of the Scout Band where he made his first trip to Marblehead, Massachusetts. He fell in love with this historic town and visited every Independence Day.
Rick was a graduate of Broad Ripple High School and attended Indiana University which would become his collegiate sports passion. He was involved in the arts with both The Avondale Playhouse as well as The Civic Theater before entering the National Guard. His media career began at WLW-I TV as the Producer/Director of sports covering IU, The Pacers, and Auto Racing. Some of Rick’s most memorable stories came from his time as the Producer/Director of the Bob Braun Show where he encountered some of the biggest celebrities of the 70s and 80s. Rick’s media career didn’t stop there, as he ascended to Director of CBS Sports and CBS News before shifting gears to help found Pearson Group Advertising. There would be another career change when he became the first Executive Director for the Day Center, subsequently The Horizon House for the Homeless. It was here that he wanted to shine a light on the issue of homelessness in Indianapolis, spending nights out in the cold, finding the unhoused, and giving them rides to local shelters. In 1985, Rick received the distinguished honor of Sagamore of the Wabash.
The Optimist Club was a focus of Rick’s for 36 years where he served as President for 2 years and Lieutenant of the State. RP.PR.Com became the name of Rick’s public relations firm where he partnered with many not-for-profit organizations throughout the years including the late John Andretti and the Race 4 Riley where he increased fundraising from $85,000 the first year to nearly $6 million during his twenty-year involvement.
Rick was preceded in death by his parents Dwight and Patricia. He is survived by his wife Joyce, his daughter Lisa, his sisters Janet Posson Barkdull and Judy Posson Schaedel, his step-daughter Meredith Goldsmith Eymann, grandson Dominic Eymann, and step-son Joseph Goldsmith.
The Crown Hill Gothic Chapel will be the location where we welcome friends and family of Rick on Tuesday, July 11th at 12 noon with a brief service at 2 pm led by Bob Hills, former Chaplain and Director of IndyCar Ministry.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Checkit4Andretti.org or Horizon House for the Homeless.
