Gene was born to Ralph W. and Gladys Stack on March 11, 1921, in Indianapolis, Indiana. He graduated from Arsenal Tech in 1939, and went on to receive an Associate’s Degree in electronics from Rose-Hulman. He married Nellie Ruth (Tabor) in December 1941, and they had three children. Gene and Ruth were married for 72 years until her death in 2014.
Gene served as Private First Class for the United States Army as a radio operator from 1942 to 1945. During his service in Normandy and Northern France, he was awarded 2 Bronze Service Stars and a Good Conduct Medal. After his honorable discharge from the military, he worked as an electrical engineer for General Motors until his retirement in 1977. He worked in TV repair for over 40 years, and owned and operated Stack & Son TV in Clermont, Indiana, until 1988.
After retirement, Gene stayed actively involved in his community, and served for several years as Trustee and Assessor for Floyd Township, Putnam County. He was a member of the Nazarene Church for over 75 years and was actively involved serving as treasurer for many years.
Gene adored family gatherings and treating his entire family to dinner especially on Easter Sundays. He had a love for fishing and enjoyed fishing trips with his friends throughout the years. Gene took great pride in his time spent serving in the war and working at GM which gave him a wealth of stories to share with family and friends. He was very social and loved every opportunity to sit and reminisce.
Gene was predeceased by his wife, Ruth Stack; son, Richard (“Dick”) Stack; and daughter, Karen Jenkins. He is survived by his son, Jerry (Pat) Stack; daughter-in-law, Brenda Stack; son-in-law, Bill Jenkins; brother, Ronnie Stack; 9 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great grandchild.
