Phillip was born in Indianapolis, IN. to Selvie and Faye Burris on November 28, 1948. He was the eighth child out of eleven born to Faye and Selvie's union. Phil grew up on the west side of Indianapolis where he enjoyed spending time outdoors with family and friends. He and several of his siblings attended 1st Baptist Church where his mother would wake them in time for them to make it to their morning Sunday School classes. Phil attended Shortridge High School. After High School, he joined the military and was trained in construction masonry. Phil married Deborah Ann Sargent on January 15, 1969, in Indianapolis, IN. He worked as a Foreman for General Motors for 38 years. Phil was a veteran of the Vietnam War and served in the US Navy, where he was on the battlefield with 4 of his brothers and 2 of his cousins and all were blessed to return home alive.
Phil was involved in United Auto Workers (UAW), Men's fastball Softball league The Raiders, and occasionally a local bowling league. Phil enjoyed fishing, cars, motorcycles, woodworking, intellectual debates, and chilling out at home. Phil was a quiet, reserved man who said he was honored to have the love of his family and often said his greatest achievement in life was his daughters and his grandchildren.
Phil was preceded in death by his Mother Faye Elizabeth Burris, Father Selvie William Burris Sr., Brothers: Edward, Tyrone (Erma), Duane Sr. (Gail) Sisters: Zoe and Bonita (James), oldest Granddaughter Monique Rasha' Hooks & grandson Devin Phillip Mallory. Mates Deborah Ann Sargent & Sharon Edwards.
He is survived by his daughters: Michelle (Vincent) Treece, Tonya (Kevin) Mallory, Amanda Burris, and bonus children Lee Robinson and Christian Edwards. Siblings: Selvie II, Carolynn, Gregory, Vera, and Myron (Lisa), Grandchildren: Domonique (Donnie), Moriah, Willie, Michael, Drew, Derrick Jr., Kevin Jr., Aaron, and Cam'ron. Great-grandchildren: Milian and Dessiah. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Visitation, at Crown Hill will be 11:00 AM Saturday, June 24, 2023.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM, June 24, 2023, at Crown Hill Funeral Home with the Rev. Kevin Mallory Sr. of Bethel AME Church, officiating. Arrangements are by Crown Hill Funeral.
Memorials may be given to Amanda Burris.
