With her parents and older brother Oscar, affectionately known as Mac, they moved from Saginaw, Michigan to Michigan City, IN. There they lived with their grandparents. A few years later, they moved once again to Gary, IN.
While living in Gary, IN, Kathryn went to school at Roosevelt High School. As a child living in Gary,
Kathryn enjoyed hanging out with her friends and going to church. She learned how to cook, sew, garden and improvise. Even with humble beginnings, Kathryn enjoyed her childhood.
Kathryn moved to Terre Haute, IN as a young adult in 1950. While there she attended IVY Tech and
Indiana Business College. In 1971, Kathryn landed a job as a bookkeeper working for the City of Terre Haute under the leadership of Mayor Brighton. This was her first introduction to working for the
government. She later moved into a federal government position; and later retired from the
workforce in 1997.
Many of Kathryn’s proud moments included becoming a mother. She was blessed with 7 children: Ronald, Michael, Tyrone, Kim, Kendall, Nikita, and Kevin. She was also blessed with 13 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild who all were certainly her pride and joy. She was always happy to talk about how the Lord blessed her family. Kathryn was extremely humbled by the Lord and his blessings.
Kathryn had many fond memories from working the concession stand at her children’s youth sporting games, making Saturday morning breakfast, baking Coconut cakes on Sundays, participating in
professional women’s organizations, and being extremely active and devoted to her church, Saints Home Church of God in Christ. At Saints Home, she led Sunday School classes, provided bookkeeping services, participated in auxiliary sales (making pies and cakes) and was the president of the
Mother’s Board.
After retiring, Kathryn spent her mornings walking 2.5 miles 5 days a week, attending daily prayer at church, going to lunch with friends and traveling to Mexico, FL, GA, IL, and TN. In addition, she loved crossword puzzles, word searches and watching Perry Mason, Murder She Wrote and Family Feud on television. In 2006, she became a babysitter for 3 of her great grandchildren, which she thoroughly enjoyed.
Kathryn passed away on December 11, 2023, in Fishers, Indiana, where she spent the final years of her life. She will be lovingly remembered by family and friends. Kathryn was preceded in death by her parents, brother, and two of her sons, Ronald and Tyrone. She is survived by her children, Michael
