June M. Moss
June 26, 1937 – May 12, 2023
IN THE CARE OF
Crown Hill Funeral Home & Cemetery
A native of Vicksburg, Mississippi, the youngest of four children born to Jamie Perkins and Horace McCarthy. She received her initial education at St. Mary’s Episcopal School and the Public School System of Vicksburg. She earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Dillard University and Indiana University respectively. She was a Registered Nurse, licensed by the States of Louisiana, Florida, and Indiana. She worked as a nurse/educator at Letterman General Hospital, San Francisco California; Veterans Hospital, Indianapolis, Florida A&M University Hospital, Tallahassee, Florida. Most recently she was employed by the Indianapolis Public Schools assigned to Crispus Attucks and Arsenal Technical High School.
The most important event in her life, by her own admission, is when she came to know the Lord in 1970 in her home alone. She was watching the “Billy Graham” Crusade. Dr. Graham made a statement that caught her attention, “If you want your life to have purpose, meaning and direction, then Christ is the answer”. At the time in her life, she had many more questions than answers. At the end of the telecast, as the invitation was given, she asked Jesus to come into her heart and be that Saviour with the much-needed answers. Since that day, she has found Jesus Christ to be a faithful, loving Saviour.
June had the gift of teaching which she used for the Lord by sharing God’s word to ladies, traveling across the country at conferences, retreats, seminars, Mother-Daughter banquets, and as a Precept Bible Leader; and, she taught Sunday School Class for ladies at Trinity for over 25 years. She was a frequent speaker at the United Conference for Women, Moody Bible Institute’s Women’s Seminars and served on the Brown County Women’s Retreat for over 20 years. She was co-founder of the Woman to Woman conference (which was started in 1986 to reach inner city woman for the Lord).
June was a faithful, devoted, supportive wife to John. She was a loving, caring, protective mother to Sean Michael, John III (AKA “Chip”), and Marc Josef McCarthy. Her grandchildren, who were the joys of her life and to whom she was known as “Grammy”, are: John IV “Nick” (AKA “Nick-Nack”), Madison Gabriella, Michael Callan, Little Marc, and James Quinton (AKA GOOGIE).
She served in her local church since 1970, wearing many hats, such as president of the lady’s missionary, director of Woman Ministries, Co-Director of Junior Church, Sunday School teacher, and Director VBS. She was the voice of the “Conversation on Christ – Woman’s Focus” for five years, a radio ministry of Trinity Baptist Church (a responsibility shared with Frank Gainer). She was a true servant and was willing to do whatever she was asked to do to further the Lord’s kingdom.
She took the command seriously in Titus to come alongside the younger women and to teach them to care for their children and to love their husbands. She made herself available on a regular basis both formally and informally.
June loved to cook and entertain in her home, preparing “soul" food for those who were blessed to sit at her table. It has been said, she could make “Dish water taste good”. She has left her favorite recipes in a booklet for her family and friends.
June never looked back after she said “YES” to Jesus. Her heart’s desire was to live a totally separated life from the world and unto God. Her favorite Psalms were a part of the program today. Psalm 86 was her “Trouble” Psalm and her Psalm of praise was 103. She truly wanted to bless the Lord with her life. Those who were fortunate enough to know her will attest that she made a really good stab at it.
Be blessed and encouraged by her life.
June leaves to cherish her memory: sons, Sean Michael and Marc Josef. Five grandchildren already noted. Brother, James McCarthy (Theresa). Nieces Lark Thomas, Melodie Kern, Karyn Aguirre McCarthy. Nephews, Pastor Larry McCarthy, Gerald Scott McCarthy, Shawn McCarthy, Scott Whitehurst. Sons-in-love, Jeff Hillman, Dr. Justin Penny, Dr. Otis Gordon. “Daughters-in-love” Paula Reid, Heather Moss, and Mercedes Cannon.
