Jose Fanor Melendez, MD, 84, of Indianapolis, Indiana passed away on Tuesday, September 24, 2024. Jose was born November 24, 1939 in Managua, Nicaragua the son of the late Jose Maria and Filomena (Garcia) Melendez.
Jose was a psychiatrist working at various hospitals in the U.S. including the Veterans Administration in Marion, Indiana and several hospitals in Indianapolis. He attended the University of San Francisco and graduated from the University of Nicaragua with a doctor of medicine.
Jose was very independent and had early ambitions to study and live in the U.S. He loved his family above all and shared the family legacy with each generation of his family. Jose played baseball and softball when he was younger. He enjoyed Major League Baseball, however, he became a fan of the Real Madrid soccer team in the La Liga Spanish League. Jose also liked to drive on cross country trips and at one point drove from Missouri to Nicaragua with his young family.
Jose is survived by his children; Brenda Raquel Melendez and Mario Jose (Melissa) Melendez, brother; Juan (Thelma) Melendez and grandchildren; Madalyn Isabel and Elias Jose Melendez. He is preceded in death by his wife, Juana Isabel (Hernandez) Melendez, from Masatepe, Nicaragua to whom he was married for 40 years and siblings; Leticia Melendez, Enrique “Henry” (Myrna) Melendez, and Teresa Largaespada.
A visitation for Jose will be held Saturday, September 28, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Family Funeral Care-Rockville West, 5791 Rockville Rd, Indianapolis, Indiana 46224, followed by a celebration of life at 1:00 PM.
Jose will be laid to rest in Floral Park Cemetery, 425 N Holt Rd, Indianapolis, Indiana 46222.
