He attended Depauw University where he joined the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity.
Upon graduation, he was selected for the Navy Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island. He was commissioned Ensign in the United States Navy. He was assigned to the USS Whitley as an Operations Officer. He transferred to the USS Yellowstone where he was promoted Lieutenant JG as both the Operation and Legal Officer.
John decided to pursue a career in medicine and graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine in 1962.
He was a practicing Gastroenterologist for over thirty years at Community Hospital.
He was President of the Marion County Medical Society, staff President and Chairman of the Board Of Community Hospital, and elected Distinguished Physician for Community Hospital.
He was a long standing member of St. Luke’s United Methodist church. John was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He and his lovely bride, Judy, celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary on June 30th.
He had a passion for playing tennis, bridge, and walking dogs (from little Hershey to 190 pound Great Dane Izzy!).
He will be forever remembered as the kindest, most caring man.
John is survived by his wife, Judy A. Lowe; daughter Cathy Lowe Haffey (Michael); daughter Jenny Lowe Riegner (Kurt); son John Lowe, Jr. (Darla); and daughter Katy McPeek (Chris); grandchildren Jack, Mary, Elliot, Henry, Johnny, Chris, Sarah, Colin and Marin.
John was preceded in death by sister Marilyn Lowe.
Visitation for John will be held Wednesday, July 7, 2021 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, 100 W. 86th Street, Indianapolis, Indiana 46260, followed by a memorial service at 11:00 AM.
